SF Sketchfest Tribute to Kevin Nealon, in conversation
SF Sketchfest presents a special tribute conversation with the one and only Kevin Nealon, in conversation with Marc Hershon.

Emmy and SAG-nominated actor, comedian, and author Kevin Nealon is best known for his nine-year stint as a cast member of NBC’s Saturday Night Live, and has received critical acclaim for his role in the Showtime series Weeds. Kevin currently stars on the CBS-TV comedy series Man With A Plan, produces and hosts digital series Hiking with Kevin, and tours his stand-up globally.

Nealon’s self-produced, edited, and hosted web series Hiking with Kevin is exclusively available on his YouTube channel of the same name. In the series, Kevin interviews his A-list celebrity friends on hikes throughout the country.

Currently, Nealon stars in CBS’s Man With a Plan, entering production on its fourth season. Kevin’s extensive television credits include Globen Globe and SAG-nominated Weeds, the titular voice role of Glenn Martin, DDS, two critically acclaimed stand-up specials for Showtime, and a number of appearances on Monk, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Still Standing and more. His extensive film career includes projects such as Anger Management, Eight Crazy Nights, The Wedding Singer, Happy Gilmore, Just Go With It, You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, Joe Dirt, Daddy Day Care, Roxanne, and Grandma’s Boy.

As one of the longest running cast members on NBC’s Saturday Night Live (1986-1995), Nealon created some of the show’s most memorable characters; his recurring role as an anchor on ‘Weekend Update’ helped make the sketch a show staple. In 1988, he earned an Emmy nomination as part of the SNL writing team.
Currently, Kevin resides in Los Angeles with his wife and son.

Capitol PUN-ishment (SOLD OUT)

This show is SOLD OUT. Tickets may be available at the door night-of.

Capitol PUNishment is a fast-paced, in-the-moment spectacle that combines everything you love about gameshows, rap-battles, and "dad" jokes, into a unique and hilarious competitive format. Audiences have cheered, groaned, and loved (often all at once) Capitol PUNishment for over two years. The show has enjoyed a nearly year-long string of sold-out performances from Sacramento to Mill Valley, where Capitol PUNishment had a pilot taping at the famous Throckmorton Theater. The show utilizes a PUNwheel to select a random topic, keeping the rotating line-up of four contestants per show (and audiences) on their intellectual toes. Competitors must outlast, outwit, and outpun each other to get to the final round: a boss-battle against creators/producers/all-around pun savants, Daniel Humbarger and Damian Harmony. Mark Burg referees each round, bringing his own brand of wit to the show, and keeps things going at a quick and steady rhythm. Interludes featuring Daniel and Damian facing off using crowd-suggested topics keep the audience engaged and impressed, as the lightning quick duo battle each other, forming puns and trying to out-do each other in real time. Once a tournament champion emerges, he or she moves on to the boss battle, which becomes an endurance run, with the "bosses" having all the advantages. Can the tournament champion survive and defeat Damian and Daniel? Only a handful have! Who's next? ($18, All Ages)

Astronomy Club: Let's Talk About Race, Baby!
Astronomy Club believes that the best way to overcome racial oppression is to identify it and satirize it. With the help of a special guest Monologist, along with short interviews from audience members, we're taking stories- from a person of any race- where race played a factor. It could be the first moment you realized someone was being racist to you. Or that moment in the office when you mistook someone for someone else because they're the same race. Or even that time when you yourself used your white privilege or played the "black card"- you get the idea! Come share your stories on race, and watch as we create a hilarious improvised set *and* solve racism once and for all!

Scheduled to perform are Jonathan Braylock, Caroline Martin, Jerah Milligan, Monique Moses and James III.

Adam Cayton-Holland: Happy Place
“Happy Place” is the new-one-man show from Adam Cayton-Holland, loosely adapted for stage from his critically acclaimed memoir, “Tragedy Plus Time” (Simon & Schuster)

“This is Cayton-Holland’s heartbreaking work of genius . . . an unforgettable read.” – Booklist

“‘Tragedy Plus Time’ absolutely gutted me—then it filled me with hope. I hate that Adam has this story to tell, but he tells it so beautifully.” – Tig Notaro

Cayton-Holland was plugging away in the world of stand-up, steadily climbing the comedy ladder, when the unthinkable happened: his little sister Lydia killed herself. His best friend, his earliest collaborator, the funniest person he knew, gone, in an instant. Life, as he knew it, was forever changed. His family was devastated. They had been there for Lydia every step of the way. They all thought she was going to get through this. But she didn’t. Instead the rug was pulled out from underneath them. Suddenly, everything felt like a lie. Adam’s “Happy Place” was leveled. He quit stand-up. Nothing felt funny anymore. Just getting out of bed was hard. Through time, plenty of therapy, and constant soul-searching, eventually Adam was able to put one foot in front of the other, to find joy in comedy again. It was, after all, a “Happy Place” that both he and Lydia had cherished. Never shying away from the tough subject matter of mental illness, depression and suicide, “Happy Place” is a darkly funny exploration of going through the unimaginable, and learning to find your sense of humor again. Funny, sad, touching and real, “Happy Place” never condescends to the viewer through and-then-comedy-saved-my-life bullshit tropes. Instead it is a refreshing and honest look at the way life throws bad at you with the good, and the desperate struggle of trying to not drown under the weight of it all. In February 2014, Armisen was named band leader of the 8G Band on "Late Night With Seth Meyers." The band, curated by Armisen, includes members of indie rock bands Les Savy Fav and Girls against Boys.

An eleven season veteran of "Saturday Night Live," Armisen has engaged audiences with memorable impressions and characters including world leaders like President Barack Obama or Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the popular digital short “Iran So Far Away” to “Weekend Update” fixtures like political comedian Nicholas Fehn or half of the songwriting team of Garth and Kat (with Kristen Wiig) to name a few. He closed out his last season in the guise of British punk rocker Ian Rubbish with a star-studded performance of the original song “It’s a Lovely Day.”

He has appeared in countless feature films including "7 Days In Hell," "Addicted To Fresno," "Easy A," "The Rocker," "Confessions of a Shopaholic," "Eurotrip," and "The Promotion" as well as lending his voice to the feature "The Smurfs." He has also appeared in the films "Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny" with Jack Black, "Baby Mama" with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, "The Ex" with Zach Braff and Jason Bateman, and in Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy."

On the small screen, he has made guest appearances on "New Girl," "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," "Man Seeking Woman," "The Awesomes," "Modern Family," "Difficult People," "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," "30 Rock," "House of Lies," "Super Fun Night," "Broad City," and "Parks and Recreation," and the cable comedy shows "The Sarah Silverman Show," "Human Giant," and "Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!." He was also seen in the smash kids show "Yo Gabba Gabba" on Nickelodeon and did voice over guest spots on "Archer" and "Chozen."

His career began as a musician in the Chicago-based post-punk band Trenchmouth as well as playing with the Blue Man Group. His transition to comedy came with the 1998 underground short film Fred Armisen’s Guide to Music and SXSW which followed him through the Austin, Texas “South by Southwest Music Festival” posing as a music journalist. In 2006, he interviewed Cat Power for the influential music website Pitchfork.com and later combined his love for music and comedy by creating the role of drummer Jens Hannemann and releasing an instructional DVD, Complicated Drumming Technique, in 2007. Armisen has landed on Rolling Stone’s “Hot List” and has also been included several times on Entertainment Weekly‘s “Must List” in regards to his many projects.

Armisen splits his time between Portland, New York, and Los Angeles.

SF Sketchfest Salute to The Chris Gethard Show
SF Sketchfest salutes the inspired insanity of The Chris Gethard Show, with an action-packed panel with Chris Gethard and some of his key collaborators showing their favorite clips, telling behind-the-scenes stories, and taking audience questions. With Bethany Hall, Connor Ratliff, David Bluvband (The Human Fish), Riley Soloner (Vacation Jason), and more, moderated by Owen Burke.

On "The Chris Gethard Show," Gethard each week walked a tightrope between chaos and control, attempting (and often failing) to wrangle celebrity guests, a cast of comedy improvisers, a studio audience and an electric fan-base of callers, all without a safety net. Throughout its rise from a live stage show to a humble NYC public access show to a beloved and critically-lauded TV series, The Chris Gethard Show attracted a host of A-list celebrity guests including Method Man, Ellie Kemper, P. Edinburgh Spotlight: Seann Walsh: After This One I'm Going Home

“On a technical level, he’s superb” **** - The Telegraph
“Comic gold” – The Guardian
“One of comedy’s hottest properties...very talented, very funny” - Evening Standard
“He remains one of the most entertaining observational comics on the block” – The Independent
“Observational mastery” – The Scotsman
“Uproariously funny” – The Sunday Mirror

Fresh from appearing on the 2018 series of BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing and making his US TV debut on Conan, Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee and self-proclaimed ‘Lie-in King’ Seann Walsh is heading back on tour with his brand new show After This One, I’m Going Home this spring.

“Unquestionably the best observational comic of his generation” (The Guardian), this dishevelled, fiery, animated, fiercely idle, millennial man-child is currently one of the UK's finest live comedians.

Seann is a regular face on the small screen with appearances as team captain on Virtually Famous (Channel 4) and as a regular on Play To The Whistle (ITV). Other TV appearances include: One For The Road (BBC 3), Live At The Apollo (BBC 2), The Jonathan Ross Show (ITV), Tonight at The London Palladium (ITV), Celebrity Juice (ITV2), 8 Out Of 10 Cats (Channel 4), 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown (Channel 4), Alan Carr’s Chatty Man (Channel 4) and Russell Howard’s Stand Up Central (Comedy Central).
Seann is currently appearing on ITV2’s newest stand-up and sketch show The Stand Up Sketch Show and will soon be appearing as host of new Netflix game-show Flinch, alongside Desiree Burch and Lloyd Griffith, which will debut over the coming months.

Seann has quickly become a well-respected comedy actor, most recently co-starring in ITV1 sitcom Bad Move alongside Jack Dee. The hugely successful first series was broadcast in autumn 2017 and returned to ITV1 this September for a six episode series and an Christmas special, which was broadcast on Christmas Eve on ITV1.

Other acting credits include starring in Comedy Central’s sitcom Big Bad World, Sky’s silent comedy Three Kinds of Stupid and he made his feature film debut in 2018’s family comedy 2:hrs, released in August 2018. He has also turned his hand to writing with his own Sky Arts Comedy Shorts Series in 2016 and he wrote and produced his very own comedy web-series The Drunk.

Seann also hosts his weekly radio show and podcast News-Ish on Fubar Radio, alongside co-host Mark Simmons. This is a partially seated show—arrive early for a seat. ($25, 21+)

The Daily Zeitgeist with Jack O'Brien and Miles Gray
There’s more news and less comprehension today than any historical period that didn’t involve literal witch trials, and trying to stay on top of it all can feel like playing a game of telephone with 30 people, except everyone’s speaking at the same time and a third of them are openly racist for some reason. From Cracked co-founder Jack O’Brien, THE DAILY ZEITGEIST is stepping into that fray with some of the funniest and smartest comedic and journalistic minds around. I Think I'd Be Good At That
Lots of comics have audience members come up after shows and tell them that their friends or coworkers have always told them they’d make a good comedian. But starting standup involves writing jokes, going to open mikes and being terrible for a while. So most intelligent people don’t even bother trying. To give those sane people a chance to feel the thrill of doing comedy, I created a show where they get to experience being a comic with the help of veteran comedians who write jokes and coach them in taking the stage. We remove all the stuff that can make that first set awful and give them the tips and tricks to succeed. “I Think I’d Be Good At That” is one of the most unique, crazy and fun comedy shows in the Bay Area. And so far, all our Newcomers have crushed it at the show and we’ve been helping people get a taste for what keeps comedians coming back to the stage. ($18, All Ages)

Fred Armisen presents a night of comedy and music with his friend Bill Frisell.

For three nights, SF Sketchfest hosts Fred Armisen "in residence" at the Chapel with Comedy for Guitar Players but Everyone is Welcome, featuring a different special guest each night.

Bill Frisell’s career as a guitarist and composer has spanned more than 40 years and many celebrated recordings, whose catalog has been cited by Downbeat as "the best recorded output of the decade." Recognized as one of America’s 21 most vital and productive performing artists, Frisell was named an inaugural Doris Duke Artist in 2012. He is also a recipient of grants from United States Artists, Meet the Composer among others. In 2016, he was a beneficiary of the first FreshGrass Composition commission to preserve and support innovative grassroots music. Upon San Francisco Jazz opening their doors in 2013, he served as one of their Resident Artistic Directors. Bill is also the subject of a new documentary film by director Emma Franz, entitled Bill Frisell: A Portrait, which examines his creative process in depth.

Fred Armisen is one of the most diversely talented performers working today with credits that run the gamut from acting, producing, and writing in both comedy and music.

He is the co-creator, co-writer and co-star of IFC’s "Portlandia" alongside Carrie Brownstein. He received an Emmy® nomination for “Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series” in 2014 and a nomination for “Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series” in 2012, 2013, and 2014. In 2015, the show received an Emmy nomination for “Outstanding Variety Sketch Series.” In 2013, Armisen, along with the other writers, won a Writers Guild Award for “Outstanding Comedy/Variety Series,” they were nominated again in 2014. "Portlandia" received prestigious Peabody Award for excellence in 2011. The critically- acclaimed show recently finished its sixth season, and the seventh season will begin airing next year.

Armisen’s most recent venture is his new IFC comedy, "Documentary Now!." The show is a curated series of half-hour documentaries and biopics, each about a completely fictitious subject. The show is returning for its second season later this year. Meyers is an executive producer for the series along with Armisen and Hader, who play all of the primary roles. Additionally, Armisen recently teamed up with Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video, NBCUniversal Telemundo, and fellow "SNL" alum Horatio Sanz to create a digital comedy channel aimed at the English-speaking Hispanic audience called Mas Mejor. The channel launched in early January and includes a weekly short-form premium comedy series and other topical video and editorial content.

This past February, Armisen starred alongside Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Penélope Cruz, Christine Taylor and Kristen Wiig in "Zoolander 2," the sequel to the hit 2001 comedy "Zoolander."

Fred Armisen Residency: Comedy for Guitar Players but Everyone is Welcome: Night 3 with Vicki Peterson (SOLD OUT)

This show is SOLD OUT. Tickets may be available at the door night-of.

Due to a change in her schedule, Wendy Melvoin will not be appearing. Vicki Peterson is replacing her.

Fred Armisen presents a night of comedy and music with special guest Vicki Peterson (The Bangles).

For three nights, SF Sketchfest hosts Fred Armisen "in residence" at the Chapel with Comedy for Guitar Players but Everyone is Welcome, featuring a different special guest each night.

Vicki Peterson began writing songs in elementary school: "I was the kid who brought a guitar to every sleep-over in order to torture everyone with my newest creation …" She started a band with friends (and younger sister Debbi Peterson), playing power pop in high school. In 1981, Debbi and Vicki met Susanna Hoffs, and the three formed the iconic 80’s group The Bangles.

In the early 90’s, Vicki began writing songs with her good friend Susan Cowsill, the two performing as the Psycho Sisters. (In 2003, they became actual sisters when Vicki married John Cowsill, Susan’s brother and Vicki’s future Action Skulls band-mate.) In addition to performing their own material, The Psycho Sisters freelanced as celebrity back-up singers. Vicki herself provided harmonies to artists like Tom Petty, the Hoodoo Gurus, John Doe, and Belinda Carlisle. She also replaced a pregnant Charlotte Caffey as guitarist on the Go-Go’s 1994-95 reunion tour.

Vicki moved to New Orleans to be a part of the Continental Drifters, a critically acclaimed songwriters’ collective, which included old friends Peter Holsapple (dB’s) and Mark Walton (The Dream Syndicate).

The Bangles began recording and touring again in 2000. Two new albums from the band have emerged in the 21st century: 2003's Doll Revolution and Sweetheart of the Sun, released to glowing reviews in 2011.

The summer of 2014 saw the long-awaited release of Up On the Chair, Beatrice, the first—and almost mythical--full-length recording from the Psycho Sisters.

Vicki’s current musical projects include the Action Skulls, a combo formed spontaneously at a Christmas party. Skull members Bill Mumy, John Cowsill and Vicki get together whenever schedules allow; they released their debut LP (Angels Hear) in 2017, and are currently at work on an LP scheduled for release later this year.
